They do not feel heard; they feel redirected.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The alternative is reflective listening. Before you respond, paraphrase what the person has said: \u201cIt sounds like you are feeling overwhelmed by the pressure at work and that it is affecting your sleep.\u201d <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This simple move, reflecting their words back to them, has a powerful effect. It tells the person, \u201cI am with you.\u201d I am not rushing past your pain to get to my opinion.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Try it this week.<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> The next time someone shares something difficult, resist the urge to advise. Instead, reflect. The questions we ask determine the depth of the conversation we have. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Closed questions \u2014 \u201cAre you okay?\u201d \u2014 invite a one-word answer and usually get one: \u201cYes\u201d (even when the person is clearly not okay). <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Open questions invite exploration: \u201cWhat has been weighing on you lately?\u201d or \u201cHow did that experience affect you?\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In everyday Kenyan scenarios, this shift is transformative. Instead of asking a struggling employee, \u201cIs everything fine at home?\u201d try \u201cWhat is going on for you right now?\u201d <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Instead of asking your teenager, \u201cDid something happen at school?\u201d try \u201cWhat was your day like today?\u201d The question opens a door; the person decides how far to walk through it.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And here is the part that most people find hardest: after you ask an open question, be silent. Let the pause sit. In our culture, silence is uncomfortable; we rush to fill it. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But silence after a question is not empty. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It is an invitation. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It says \u201ctake your time.\u201d Some of the most important things people will ever tell you will come after a five-second pause that you had the discipline not to fill.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>A useful practice:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> count to five in your head after you ask a question. If the person has not responded by then, resist the urge to rephrase or offer an answer. More often than not, they are gathering courage. But the impact can be harmful.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The skill here is recognising the edge of your competence and having the language to refer to. A referral is not abandonment. It sounds like this: \u201cI care about you deeply, and what you are going through is important. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I think <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pcbuilds.site\/sp\/therapy-in-kenya\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">a professional counselor could support you<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> with this in ways that I cannot.
